What is an apostille?

An apostille is an official certificate that verifies a US public document so it can be legally recognised in another country. It confirms the authenticity of the signature, the authority of the person who signed, and the validity of the official seal or stamp. It does not verify the contents of the document.

Texas now issues a single universal apostille that works as an apostille for countries in the Hague Apostille Convention and as an authentication for countries outside it. You no longer need to work out which one to request.

Who issues apostilles in Texas?

For Texas-issued documents, apostilles are issued by the Texas Secretary of State. For federal documents such as FBI background checks, they are issued by the US Department of State. We handle preparation and submission for both, so your documents are not delayed or rejected.

Why use a service rather than going yourself?

The state fee is only $15, but the process changed in 2026 and it now costs more time than most people expect:

• Apostille service at the Austin office is appointment-only on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays
• Walk-in service runs Mondays and Fridays only, with queues of fifteen minutes to over an hour
• Both routes are capped at ten documents per person or company
• Mail requests take up to 25 business days, sometimes longer
• Recordable documents must have been issued within the past five years
• The wrong notarial wording gets the document rejected, and you start again

How much does it cost?
$90 per document through ARF Standard. The Texas Secretary of State's own fee is $15 per document, or $10 for international adoptions capped at $100 per child.

How long does it take?
One to two business days for Texas-issued documents. Federal documents route through Washington and take considerably longer.

Does my document need notarising first?
Vital records such as birth, death and marriage certificates must be certified copies and must not be notarised. Private documents such as powers of attorney and affidavits do need notarising first, with correct Texas wording.

Can you apostille a document from another state?
Not through Texas. An apostille must be issued by the state that issued the document, or by the US Department of State for federal documents.
